Student Room Reveal: Jo Curran

We are beyond thrilled to feature our Kids Rooms 101 graduate Jo Curran from Pretty Petite Co on our blog today!

I’m Jo, and I am addicted to interiors, so it was a given that I wanted to create a beautiful space for my little love, my three year old daughter Aoife. I have always loved to decorate spaces, my first memory being when I was little, and a beautiful old dressing table was given to me for Christmas. Most 8 year olds would turn their nose at such a present, but it became my sanctuary, moving my jewellery box and snow globe and other special pieces until it was juuuuuust right. To this day, I still have that same dressing table in my home, and I can barely believe that Aoife too loves to sit up at the table and organise the shells and books that now adorn it. I truly believe that a love of interiors runs through my veins. It’s what I think about as I go to sleep and have often been caught sleep talking to my husband, sharing my delight in finding the perfect cushion cover for a particular space. Did I mention before that I am an interiors addict?

When I created Aoife’s Once Upon a Time room, I imagined more than just the furniture, the rug and the cushions. I dreamed of a room where we would cuddle, read books and twirl. A room for her to grow, to learn and to dream. Aoife loves to twirl in her tutus and capes, so the room I designed needed to have an open space with room for her to do so. She adores reading books, so a reading nook and shelves to display her favourites was a must. Still only being small, I wanted the space to have plenty of room her to sit and play on the floor, but I also wanted to add a little height and comfort by putting her dolls house on a gorgeous old antique coffee table.

Aoife’s room is a mixture of pieces that are old and new. Some pieces are new from brick and mortar stores, some are purchased through the gorgeous Australian small businesses that I source on Instagram (I love being able to support other women in business) and other pieces have been found in op-shops and antique stores which I have restored to incorporate in the space. I love the fact that each piece from an antique store has its own story, it has lived another life before it has come to share in ours.

I was so fortunate to have a friend in the photography industry, Aimee Cook from @aimee_cook who captured the mood and whimsy of this space perfectly. Her attention to detail was incredible, and her professionalism made this whole project feel complete. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but Aimee’s photos left me absolutely speechless. For anyone who is wanting to take their interior design to the next level, I can not highly recommend enough that they have it professionally photographed.

I have always been passionate about interior design but was looking for a program to be able to capture the concepts that I had floating around in my head and display them visually. One night I was Insta chatting to the fabulous Kristy from Minnie and Me Interiors about our love of design, and she mentioned that she had recently completed the Kids Room 101 program. I had been following Bel Kurtz from Petite Interior Co and loved her style and attention to detail, so this program totally made sense to me. It was the best decision I have made when it comes to upskilling myself, as the course itself was very practical, thorough and considered every aspect of the design process. Since completing the course, I have enjoyed the Kids Rooms 101 challenges, providing me with the opportunity to challenge myself and create spaces that are out of my comfort zone. It is brilliant to have a supportive Facebook community to be able to share ideas, concepts and design boards with.

How creating a mood board can save you money

Creating a Mood Board Can Save You Money!

Have you ever purchased something, rushed home, full of excitement, only to realise that it just doesn’t work in your room?

Wouldn’t it be amazing to know if the item worked before parting with your hard earned cash?

Creating a mood board (or design boards as we like to call them) is one of the most critical steps when professional interior designers plan a room. Making all the product decisions prior to purchasing anything, means less money wasted on items that simply don’t work. Mood boards or design boards are also a fantastic way to see how new items will work alongside your existing pieces.

ASHERS-DESIGN-BOARD

Our world first, online children’s interior styling course, Kids Rooms 101, has been created for parents (or parents to be) with little to no design experience to learn the tools and knowledge to decorate their homes like the professionals. Even with just basic computer skills (and no special programs), we’ll have you creating design boards like a pro in just a few short weeks.

Student Room Reveal: Jess Douglas-Monks

We are thrilled to share another amazing student room reveal by one of our original talented Kids Rooms 101 student’s Jess!

My name is Jess, I’m 30 years old and I have 2 daughters Evie and Arya (5 & 4) and a newborn son named Elias who was born on November 18.

I took part in the initial Kids Rooms 101 course after following Bel and Petite Interior Co.™ for a long time and deciding that I wanted to learn how to put my ideas into action!

I discovered I really enjoyed working on interiors when we built our first house in 2014 and I especially enjoyed designing our girls rooms which were heavily inspired by Bel’s own girl’s bedrooms with the greys, pinks and golds.

When I found out I was pregnant with Eli and my husband didn’t want to know the sex, it was a great challenge to design a gender neutral nursery and not give it away for the whole 9 months.

lunaandwolfe10

I had designed 2 nurseries while doing the course but I felt I wanted something different for Eli.

I went with a musical, monochrome theme that pays homage to some of our favourite musicians- mainly John Lennon and The Beatles.

I purchased a lot of the products in Eli’s room from stockists recommended by the Kids Rooms 101 course and was lucky enough to be given some wonderful things by businesses that I style/brand rep for.

My favourite items in Eli’s nursery are the John Lennon print which was made for me by Kate at Studio Cockatoo and is hung amongst a golden triangle painted by a talented friend and the two prints from the beautiful Frida at Black & Type that are the lyrics to ‘Beautiful Boy’ by John Lennon which was kept covered until Eli was born and the ‘Always’ print which is my favourite moment from the Harry Potter series.

Once I have finished my maternity leave I hope to expand my own interiors/ product styling business, Luna & Wolfe that I began just before I was due with Eli.

Student Room Reveal: Gabby Eason

gabby-eason1

We love sharing our student’s work here at Kids Rooms 101 HQ and today is no exception! Gabby Eason joined our course in June 2016 and we are delighted to share her story.

My name is Gabby, I’m a wife & mum two beautiful babes – Mason 4 & 1.

We run a family company in Sydney and have also been renovating our home, which I have loved. But I felt I needed to branch out to try and do something I have always loved.

I have had a passion for interiors and especially kids interiors for quite some time. I knew I wanted to do something in the kid’s rooms but just didn’t know where to start. After having Isla I would search Instagram for all things interiors to try and gain some ideas, for me I knew what I wanted to create but I just didn’t know how to put it together.

Once I found Petite Interior Co. I knew I was on to something good and was even more eager to try and create something for my little girl’s room, as I just loved all things girly – soft pinks, whites, grey, & timber.

Once I saw Kids Rooms 101 were running courses I thought this is it, this is how I can get my passion to come alive as I had so many ideas but just didn’t know how to structure the room with feature walls, bedding, rugs, storage etc. I looked into the course, which sounded great as it could fit into my busy lifestyle. It was flexible, video tutorials, a Facebook forum and supplier list which was a fantastic bonus as this could start to help me get my way.

Since starting Kids Rooms 101, I feel it has given me so much confidence and knowledge and has taken me into other avenues.

The mood board tutorial was my favourite as I loved seeing how it could come together.

It’s great that I can refer back to the Kids Rooms 101 membership at any time to help me with my future designs.
