Getting to know Paper Empire Australia

pe160503 Paper Empire-9532

Therese O’Donoghue is the owner of Paper Empire Australia. Paper Empire Australia represent Studio Snowpuppe, Faunascapes, Stefan Gevers, Sofie Boersting, FotoFactory, Monika Petersen and Foruu.

As a sponsor of Kids Rooms 101 we wanted to get to know Therese and her business a little better…

Briefly tell us about your business…

I run the business with my husband who is one of our artists (Stefan Gevers). I manage the day to day running, sales & creative direction. We develop print ranges, limited edition prints & small furniture. We are also agents for several international brands, but 80% of our range is made locally.

How did you start Paper Empire Australia?

Paper Empire started in late 2013 with the aim of promoting great art ranges. We began with 7 prints & 20 greeting cards. It was slow & steady for a while, then I came across 2 international brands that were unlike anything I’d seen locally. That tripled our range and helped create a pathway.

What is the inspiration behind your business? Why do you do what you do?

Artists are my inspiration. Having seen many struggle with the traditional gallery system, I thought there should be a middle road where affordable collections could be developed to support their practise & bring the wider public some great choice in art products. I set up Paper Empire to be involved with several industries I love – design, retail, interiors & art.

What were you doing before you started your business?

I was employed by an agency to represent other independent designers. Now I only represent myself & its so exciting!

What do you struggle the most within your business?

Finding balance! I work many hours & find it hard to switch off.

What does your dream life look to you?

Continuing the growth of my business with staff to help spread the load would be a dream! I dream of a showroom/retail space with my priority shifting to creative direction. A beautiful family holiday once a year would complete the dream!

What would you like your customers to know about your business (that they may not know already)?

I worked full time for first 18 months of my business. I’ve only been working full time in my own business for 1 year. It feels like a privilege.

Share any wins you have had with your business…

Surviving the first year! We’ve met some incredible & supportive customers and establishing our first showroom has been a lot of fun.

Student Room Reveal: Bree Mitchell

sipsopkids-final

It’s no secret that we are big fans of our Kids Rooms 101 student Bree Mitchell. Bree joined our course all the way back in October 2015 and we have loved following along her design journey ever since. After recently completing her 3 years olds bedroom we are honoured to share the results with you.

My name is Bree, I‘m the mother of two active, fun loving and adventurous little boys. I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old. My husband and I have recently moved our little family into our new house in QLD, Australia.

Around this time last year, my husband and I were busy making plenty of decisions regarding house plans, furniture and decor and I was getting consumed by all the beautiful lnstagram accounts when I came across Kids Rooms 101. I had previously met Bel from Petite Interior Co. so I knew this course would be reliable and worth doing.

Leading up to the course, I knew I liked a combination of monochrome and timber and that my eldest sons favourite colour was green, he loved the outdoors and adventure. However, I was unsure how to structure the room with the different elements; materials, colours, feature wall, storage and products.

Kids Rooms 101 gave me the clarity, confidence and tools I needed to complete my first mood board. I then used the Facebook chat to get advice when I needed it and the awesome supplier discount handbook to create my little mans dream room. Since then, I have also completed a toy room and my next project will be my youngest sons bedroom. I love having life membership to the course is great to refer back to, as I continue on my interior design journey.

Thank you so much Bree! We will continue to follow you on your interior design journey and you can follow her too on Instagram @sipsopkids.
